Press Freedom in Africa

This year's Reporters Without Borders international press freedom index is out and, as usual, Africa has fared poorly. The continent's highest ranked countries (with the best record of press freedom over the past year) are Cape Verde (in 9th place, globally), Namibia (20th) and Mali (25th). South Africa and Botswana share 42nd place, much further down, but slightly higher than the USA.

BOTSWANAN CARTOONIST BUNDLED OUT OF COURT FOR DRAWING
Seven security officers decended on Albert Lekgaba, cartoonist for The Botswana Gazette, as he sat sketching in court for his newspaper. He was then escorted out of a courtroom, and his drawings confescated in an incident which typifies the contempt held for cartoonists by authority figures in many parts of Africa.
Fortunately, the Judge, on hearing of the episode, reminded the officers that it was not illegal to draw in court, and neither was it a disturbance. He ordered that the cartoonist's sketches be returned to him and that he be released to continue with his work, difusing what might have been an even messier episode. Batswana ranks joint 42nd with South Africa in the latest World Press Freedom Index.

More…Crisis in Limpopo
Rising debt and rising flood waters have brought huge challenges to the province of Limpopo, with the poorest of the poor - as always - the biggest sufferers.
While rescue teams have been dispatched to assist flood victims, the national government has sent in a task force to take over the administration of five departments riddled with corruption and maladministration. Premier Cassel Mathale and his close ally Julius Malema have accused the government of political interference.
Cartoonists were quick to combine the two stories which have kept the province in the headlines in recent weeks. Follow the story in cartoons here.

BROMANCING THE STONE
Julius Malema and Thabo Mbeki's relationship has had its ups and downs, as could be expected from two such opposite people. Juju: Passionate, vocal and populist. Thabo: Cerebral, aloof and cold. They share a distaste for the current Presidency, which may just be the glue that binds them. If, that is, Thabo can forget what Juju once did to him; as evidenced in the earliest cartoon in this bromantic tale.
