SUBMITTING CARTOONS TO AFRICARTOONS

Qualifying Criteria

All professional editorial cartoonists whose work is regularly published in the established media are invited to submit their work. Authors of strip cartoons are also invited, provided that their strips incorporate a degree of social or political commentary.

Content Advisory

A diversity of political opinions is welcomed, and cartoonists from the continent’s free press are particularly encouraged to submit their work. The editors reserve the right to decide upon the merits of any cartoon before publishing it, and to pull any cartoon that they deem to be racist, incorporate hate speech, or that is unfairly offensive to any group (allowing that most cartoons will inevitably offend someone), or cartoons which do not meet with a general standard of quality or intelligibility.

Cartoon specifications

*Please send your cartoons as jpegs, 72 dpi, and 800 pixels wide to submissions@africartoons.com

*Each cartoon should be dated, with the publication’s name on the cartoon.

*Ideally, cartoons should be saved in the Africartoons format: yearmmdd_yourname_publication.jpg (eg: 20100125_Zapiro_TheTimes.jpg).

*Regular contributors will be given the ability to post their cartoons directly onto the site, with added privileges allowing keyword authoring etc.

*Please submit a self portrait (or at least a photograph of yourself) and a biography that will help inform the information we post on your profile.

Permission to publish

By submitting your cartoons to Africartoons you confirm that you are the copyright holder of the cartoons and agree to the terms and conditions as they appear on this page (and may be updated from time to time), including allowing us to publish your cartoons on the internet and use them for any promotional purpose. You also consent to the non commercial use of your cartoons, provided that they are not changed or edited and that you are properly credited as the author.

Commercial Use

Africartoons will represent you in the instance of any commercial interest in the use or purchase of your cartoons that is derived via the website. In the instance of such an enquiry we will contact you to inform you of the offer.

Additional Services

While making your cartoons accessible to a greater worldwide audience, Africartoons will also actively promote the site to online news sites and print publications that share an interest in African affairs, and encourage a growing community of interested parties to regularly visit the site so that it becomes the most popular resource of African cartoons. To achieve this we will proactively engage with new technology and media (such as social media), and ensure a high level of visibility of the content. Africartoons will also encourage better interaction between cartoonists and lend weight to matters of mutual interest to African cartoonists, and the art of cartooning.

Charges

Africartoons will host your cartoons and cartoonist's profile as a free service, however we hope to subsidise the development and running costs of this site through commissions earned through the sale of prints, originals and publishing rights of the cartoons (in which proceeds will be shared with the cartoonist), and other joint ventures such as printed publications published with interested cartoonists. Cartoonists will be invited, but not obliged, to participate in any such joint venture that we deem viable. Africartoons will also provide a platform for sale of any publications or associated merchandise produced by the cartoonist and organise exhibitions and speaking engagements with the cartoonists.

 Updates to these Terms

Please revisit these terms and conditions regularly to be updated with any changes which would become effective when they are posted here.
