  2. Brett Murray talks at Africartoons Exhibit of Spear cartoons

    Fine artist and satirist Brett Murray, the painter of the controversial portrait of President Zuma titled The Spear, was a special guest of africartoons at the exhibition of Spear Cartoons we curated as part of the co/MIX Day at the Open Book Festival in Cape Town last weekend.

    Also at the event were africartoonists Brandan, Chip, Deni Brown, Gavin Thomson, Stent and Zapiro, whose work was on display at the exhibition and as part of africartoons' slide presentation of Julius Malema cartoons.

  3. Cartoonists stand against media restrictions

    South Africa’s top editorial cartoonists have banded together to protest against the government’s intended press restrictions.

    In rejecting the proposed Protection of Information Bill and Media Tribunal, they have warned that these restrictions will erode the right to freedom of expression achieved by the country’s hard fought struggle for democracy.

    FAMOUS OSTRICH TAKES FLIGHT ONCE MORE

    ZIBI, the litter busting ostrich created by cartoonist Dov Fedler in 1979 to inspire a nation to “Zappit in the Zibi Bin”, has been brought out of retirement by the City of Cape Town in a 3 year rights deal with the cartoonist, and with an option to extend the flightless bird’s contract even further.

  6. CARTOONS IN CONTEXT

    Two Centuries of SA Political Cartoons

    The Sowetan newspaper and Museum Africa in Newtown, Johannesburg, will be hosting an exhibition titled "Cartoons in Context" which will showcase a selection of old and new political cartoons by some of the country's top editorial cartoonists.

    Accompanying text and images will take viewers on a journey through South African history, spanning 200 years since the late 1700s.

  7. ZAPIRO DRAWS FIRE

    MUHAMMAD CARTOON CONTROVERSY

    Jonathan Shapiro - the cartoonist Zapiro - has entered the fray surrounding the depiction of the prophet Muhammad by drawing him lamenting his followers' lack of humour in a cartoon published in the Mail & Guardian newspaper today.

    The cartoon's appearance comes in the wake of the international "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" challenge to a violent and threatening Islamic response to cartoon depictions of the prophet since 2005. Zapiro's fellow cartoonists are divided in their response to his cartoon.
