The Oscar Pistorius story broke on Valentine’s Day, shortly before the Mail & Guardian went to print. I think I was persuaded by Oscar’s version of events for about 10 minutes. I had a short discussion with then M&G editor-in-chief Nic Dawes and immediately did the cartoon, which reflects my skepticism. It reminded me of having to make an early call on Hansie Cronje’s match fixing.



Born in Cape Town in 1958, Zapiro couldn’t imagine a career in cartooning, so he studied architecture at University of Cape Town.
