Zapiro has shared an interesting insight with Africartoons regarding the creation of this cartoon. Alerted to the news of ET’s death by sms while on holiday, he hadn't planned to draw a cartoon for his paper the next day. But the gravitas of the news changed his mind...

"I realised I had to do a cartoon. Spoke at a braai to someone who'd heard Jackson Mthembu insisting the song is a metaphor (which it was to an extent during the Struggle--- I remember joining in singing it myself in those days when it seemed to be aimed at apartheid power). The metaphor snippet got me thinking while I was on a mountain walk and I tried the punchline on a couple of people who responded well. Had to buy kiddie stationery at Pick `n Pay as I had not planned to draw. Sketched the rough for the cartoon on piece of thin A4 at two seaside restaurants, finished it with fineliner and tippex and resorted to faxing it from another restaurant where the fax machine kept sending the damned thing in two pieces with the middle bit missing. Succeeded at last.

The ET affair may be a wake-up call in various ways for the country. For me it was also a wake-up call about getting technologically up to speed when I'm out of town.
At least the cartoon itself worked out well."

Terre'Blanche Murder

Zapiro's commentary is a powerful depiction of the murder of right wing leader Eugene Terre'Blanche, punctuated by a potent opinion on whether or not the song which contains the words "Kill the Boer" should be taken metaphorically or not. "What's a metaphor?" ask the murderers.
