BACK TREKKERS
BACKTREK: Gavin Thomson notes that in 1834 the Voortrekkers packed their goods and trekked from Cape Town over the mountains to greener pastures to escape. This they did to escape the repressive laws of the local authority. And every year since then (says the cartoon), come holiday season, they return to break the laws!
This cartoon typifies a long-standing gripe held by "Kaapies" (who live in the Cape) against the "Vaalies" (Now "Gauties") who invade every season, bringing with them havoc, mayhem and much needed tourism revenue!
