    Fine artist and satirist Brett Murray, the painter of the controversial portrait of President Zuma titled The Spear, was a special guest of africartoons at the exhibition of Spear Cartoons we curated as part of the co/MIX Day at the Open Book Festival in Cape Town last weekend.

    Also at the event were africartoonists Brandan, Chip, Deni Brown, Gavin Thomson, Stent and Zapiro, whose work was on display at the exhibition and as part of africartoons' slide presentation of Julius Malema cartoons.

    The Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalism Award finalists have been announced, and three cartoonists have been short listed to win recognition for the best editorial cartoon. The judging panel, convened by Paula Fray, noted the high standard of the submissions in all categories, and believed that the finalists chosen aptly underscored this year’s theme – perfect balance.

  3. Cartoonists stand against media restrictions

    South Africa’s top editorial cartoonists have banded together to protest against the government’s intended press restrictions.

    In rejecting the proposed Protection of Information Bill and Media Tribunal, they have warned that these restrictions will erode the right to freedom of expression achieved by the country’s hard fought struggle for democracy.
