There was a cartoon I wanted to do questioning the Bafana Bafana squad just before the start of the World Cup. But I decided against it as I didn't want to spoil the mood that engulfed our country and brought us together as a nation!
Now that the World Cup is over, maybe I could touch on it a little... If you haven't noticed most of the players came from the three Gauteng teams (Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns). The team that won the league for the last three years was Supersport United... The Premier League player of the year was Daine Klate... The leading goal scorer was Glen Salmon... The second best team in the league was Ajax Cape Town, in fact they have been one of the best teams in the league over the last ten years... Wits University ran these two teams very closely in the league and won the Nedbank Cup, yet their players were totally ignored. Klate and Salmons were not even in the squad let alone in the team!
Bryce Moon was suddenly dropped from the squad which came as a shock and I still can't understand how a player of the calibre of Naseef Morris who is arguably our best centre back could be totally overlooked!? This could have been an ideal opportunity to have fielded a team that represented the "Rainbow Nation" and we didn't!!
Am I being racist by questioning the composition of the Bafana team!? Why would I... I come from the trenches fighting for a non racial society and this team was racially skewed and not the non racial team we dreamt would represent us in the World Cup!! Did Parreira pick this team or was it the "Mafia"!!?? Was this team picked to win the World Cup or was it just used to "showcase" certain players so that they could be sold for millions of Euros to overseas clubs by greedy club owners who control soccer in this country with the tentacles of an octopus!!
