Back in the day, cartoonists would hardly be affected by a power outage. They'd simply light up a candle and carry on handcrafting their work before delivering it to their newspaper by car. Even the ancient light table could be replaced by a torch or candle and a sheet of glass.

These days, cartoonists rely heavily on many powered devices in the manufacture of a cartoon; from TVs and radios for their news sources, to computers for research and to work with scanners and email, not to mention charged cell phones (to let the editor know it's going to be a few minutes late) and - possibly the most important appliance of all - the kettle!

Of course, all this technology makes our lives easier when it works, but when it doesn't, chaos reigns supreme. These are the challenges that inspired this bright idea.
