Free Speech for Dummies
FREE SPEECH FOR DUMMIES: Sometimes it's interesting to go back a year to see where we've come from. This cartoon by JERM is a parody of another cartoon of his, this time commenting on Julius Malema's call for media control (echoing an ANC mandate from their Polokwane conference). As this cartoon dated 28 August 2009 shows, there was a predictable outcry by cartoonists, their fellows in the media, democracy watchdogs and free speech advocates. So the controversial issue was put on ice... until after the Soccer World Cup, when it was placed right on top of the agenda again.
