Media Freedom Day

KEEP OUR MEDIA FREE: On this day in 1977 - just one month after Black Consciousness leader Steve Biko was murdered in prison by the apartheid government - the regime moved to close down black newspapers and jail its editors and journalists. That day is remembered as Black Wednesday, and the freedom of expression achieved since then is today celebrated as Media Freedom Day. But, as Wilson MGOBHOZI reminds us here, these freedoms are not to be taken for granted, and the ANC's current onslaught on the press must be resisted, lest we slip back to those dark days once more.

If you've not yet done so, please add your voice to the 29 South African cartoonists who have signed a petition against these threats to press freedom by clicking on the Take Action button here.
