PW, Stoffel establish the Free Press in SA
UNWITTING FOUNDERS OF THE FREE PRESS: Apartheid era President PW Botha and his then Minister of Home Affairs Stoffel Botha (who was responsible for press censorship) unwittingly provided the fertile ground upon which the free 'alternative' press would be built.
Veteran cartoonist NANDA SOOBBEN marks the launch of The Weekly Mail (later to become The Maill & Guardian) in 1988 with this cartoon. He submitted it to africartoons.com on Press Freedom Day (October 19th) twenty two years later, with the comment which appears in the column to the left of the cartoon.
