1979 was a momentous year in the history of Southern Africa. The white settler regime tried to sell Abel Muzorewa, an Anglican Priest, as the new Prime Minister of "Zimbabwe-Rhodesia." It simply did not wash. Zimbabweans joked, "Ian Smith sent Muzorewa to Britain to be trained to become a 'blacksmith.'" The guerrilla armies of ZIPRA and ZANLA controlled the country side. Even air travel was not safe anymore. Zimbabwe was about to gain its independence. On 26 December 1979 the charismatic and much loved leader of the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army, General Josiah Tongogara died in a mysterious car accident in Mozambique. He led the very successful liberation war against Ian Smith's army before his death
