It’s a deep, but nice cartoon, in my opinion.  Lots of subtle and relevant messages.

AFRICARTOONS ASKED JERM ABOUT THIS SERIES OF CARTOONS...

Africartoons: JERM, are you really intending to run 12 positive cartoons through to Christmas eve? What on earth possessed you to do this?

JERM: It's a tricky challenge, to be honest. On the one hand, I look like a fairy, but on the other hand, it gives me an opportunity to refresh my thoughts. It's been an exhausting year for me in many respects, from getting married, to resigning from The Times, to accepting a position at a new newspaper with different readers and goals. Besides, it's Christmas; I can be forgiven. Hopefully.

Africartoons: It must be difficult to go cold turkey on all that skepticism which informs so many political cartoons; how do you intend to manage it?

JERM: Well, doing a few positive cartoons is a lot harder than the usual irreverence. I manage it by drinking lots of coffee and hoping that I don't lose my job.

Africartoons: Any early signs of withdrawal symptoms?

JERM: Yes. There are such huge stories happening right now. I feel like I'm cheating myself. But, I'll look back at this series and hopefully smile because I was the first in South Africa to do it.

Africartoons: Will those news events feature in the cartoons?

JERM: That depends on whether or not I'm clever enough. In other words, don't get your hopes up.

Africartoons: OK. We’ll check in with you every few days to see how it’s going.

Jerm's 12 Days of Chrismas: The Third Day

THREE FRENCH HENS calling for liberté, égalité, fraternité for all humankind. This third instalment of a twelve-part series of cartoons celebrates the set of three broadly defined human rights and freedoms adopted by the French Revolution. It also touches on current affairs such as the WikiLeaks drama (in which the freedom of information and freedom of expression are being challenged by opponents of the website), and the unfair balance of power at the United Nations (where the only permanent representatives on the Security Council are Northern Hemisphere based nuclear armed countries).

JERM'S CHRISTMAS WISH LIST is a series of editorial cartoons drawn to the tune of 'The Twelve Days of Christmas'. It will run week-daily through to Christmas Eve. We interview JERM about this innovative series in the column to the left of the cartoon.
