An IMF Sex Scandal of Continental Proportions
BANK STATEMENT: South Africa's Finance Minister, Pravin Gordhan has called for someone from the emerging economies to replace Dominique Strauss-Kahn as head of the IMF, hinting strongly that his own predecessor, Trevor Manuel, is highly qualified for the position. The crisis the institution finds itself in provides a perfect opportunity, many think, for it to reposition itself from the exclusive and paternalistic club it has been since its inception, into a more global partner. Some would suggest that the abuse that the IMF's chief is accused of committing against a humble West African maid exemplifies the way in which the Fund deals with its African clients. After all, "Don't you know who we are?"
