South Africa Celebrates 20 Years as a Republic
YOU CAN'T HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT: Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Republic Day (since SA became a republic in 1961), Pik and PW Botha can't help but feel that there is something missing in the recipe for a prosperous country. It took them almost another decade to realise just what that missing ingredient was... Democracy! Activist cartoonist NANDA SOOBBEN marks the occasion.
Here's a brief timeline of SA's status. Note another anniversary is also on May 31!
1910, May 31: The Union of South Africa was created when four British colonies unite.
1934: SA became a overeign state within British Empire.
1961, May 31: SA becomes a republic.
1968, October: SA leaves the Commonwealth (rejoins in June 1994).
1994, 27 April: South Africa hosts its first democratic elections (now celebrated as Freedom Day).
1994, 10 May: Nelson Mandela sworn in as SA's first democratically elected president.
