Oil on the Tracks

SLICK POLITICKING: President Zuma hopes an investigation into the Oilgate scandal will detract any competitors for the party presidency at next year's ANC conference in Mangaung.

Remarkably, this SIWELA cartoon appeared on the exact same day as the following JERM one (scroll down to see), proving that neither cartoonist could have been privy to the other's idea beforehand. When this happens, we award the cartoons a GMTA tag (standing for Great Minds Think Alike). In this instance, the similarities are extraordinary. The news story dictated the oil slick and many of the shared circumstances (which were similarly interpreted by Zapiro and other cartoonists). But the fact that both cartoonists set their scene as a racetrack in a stadium, with the characters so similarly placed is astounding - until one takes into account that these are commonly used devices used by cartoonists to show presidential races. The left to right direction that they are running in is (subliminally at least) symbolic of going forward.
