Farewell Dolly (1931 - 2011)
FAREWELL DOLLY: NANDA SOOBBEN bids a fond farewell to cricketing legend Basil 'Dolly' D'Oliveira who left South Africa when apartheid structures blocked his advancement in the sport. He was snapped up by England and included in a planned 1968 tour of his former homeland, but the ensuing furore resulted in the tour being disbanded. This in turn gave power to the sports boycott against Pretoria's racist regime, and Dolly would become a struggle hero for his sacrifices and the role he played in exposing the fear and hatred that fuelled an ideology. He went on to play 44 tests for England and 4 ODI's.
