The Year of Secrecy
OLD FLAME: 2011 will be remembered as the year in which freedom of expression - that pillar of democracy so hard won - received its biggest threat by way of the Zuma sponsored and euphemistically named 'Protection of Information Bill'. Unsurprisingly, Zapiro chose this theme to sum up the year in his traditional year-end Mail & Guardian cartoon. This cartoon was also painted by the artist onto a surfboard for wavescape's annual surfboard auction, fetching R35 000 for charity [see image below]
