"While the cartoon by Siwela (January 4) tried to put the record straight regarding milestone events of our liberation struggle, it was misleading in one respect. While the cartoon by Siwela (January 4) tried to put the record straight regarding milestone events of our liberation struggle, it was misleading in that It failed to acknowledge the role of the PAC in the events around the June 16, 1976 students’ uprisings.

The PAC underground, led by its late and former president Zeph Mothopeng, played a role in the events that led to the uprisings. This was alongside the role of the Black Consciousness structures above ground. PAC members from Gauteng to Cape Town were held. Naboath Ntshuntsha and Bonaventura Malaza were tortured to death.

The students’ uprisings resulted in a secret trial in Bethal, Mpumalanga, where 15 PAC and three BC members appeared before Judge Curlewis. First and second accused were Mothopeng and John Ganya. Some of the accused were Dr Landingwe from Cape Town, and the late Molathlegi Thlale (BC, from Kugersdorp), Mike Motsobane, Marl Shinners, Stembele Khala, Themba Hlatshwayo, Hamilton Keke and the late Zolile Hlophe. In his judgment, Judge Curlewis told Mothopeng that he (Mothopeng) had predicted and orchestrated the uprisings."
