Rhino Wars Take Human Toll

A policeman and a  game ranger were killed "in mysterious circumstances" during a shoot-out in the Kruger National Park (KNP) this weekend according to reports, adding to the toll of human lives in the Rhino Wars.In 2011, 26 suspected poachers died in shootouts with anti-poaching units, and more have been killed this year.

The Rhino death toll
for the first four months of 2012 (to April 30) has reached 199, maintaining the trajectory which has seen a dramatic increase in rhino deaths every year since 2008  - resulting in 1 185 rhino deaths so far, and a decline in rhino populations since 2009. The Kruger Park has been hardest hit, with 119 rhinos poached in the first four months of 2012, as shown by these recently released statistics:
