ZAPIRO's cartoon borrows the famous iconography from a decades-old South African awareness campaign that warns against veld fires.
Bokkie is a Grysbok, a deer endemic to the Western Cape province.
Yellow Mini website explains; "The signs have changed over the years with different "Bokkie Says" messages, but pretty much always depicting a grysbok with a tear in his eye".
"He is reminding us how we messed up his life chucking stompies out the car windows, not putting out our braais properly or illegally making fires." See this wonderful 1962 story about Bokkie the Greysbok that we found.
