CHAIRMAN ZUMAO: JERM employs the powerful imagery of Chairman Mao to draw parallels between the Chinese and South African leaders' populist styles. There are other parallels too, which make this parody (or 'culture jam') work: Both Mao and "Zumao" embarked on a cultural revolution which turned around the culture of their respective organisations, with a youth focussed message and a disregard for the values of the old order. Revolutionary speak of taking up machine guns and "Killing for Zuma" add to the association. Jacob Zuma's meteoric rise to power has been nothing short of revolutionary.
