Rhino Slaughter
STATS FROM THE KILLING FIELDS
Between 2000 and 2007 no more than 25 Rhinos were killed in any one year - In 2008 that number more than trebbled to 83 and was 5 times as high in 2009 (122) - In 2010; 333 Rhino died at the hands of poachers and in 2011 the number rose to 448; almost 5% of the South African population (20 700 Black and White Rhinos). Add to this the number of Rhinos being hunted in South Africa (legal and illegally). The killings are fuelled by a black market value of refined rhino horn in the Far East; of between US$30 000 and US$ 40 000/KG. It is falsely believed to have medicinal and aphrodisiac benefits.
