  1. SAVE ZANEWS - BUY A POLITICIAN (Strings Attached)

    Thierry Cassuto and Zapiro, the producers of ZANEWS are hoping that an appeal to the public for donations will ensure the resurrection of their latex puppets and the launch of the fourth season of the popular satire.

    A target of US$150 000 has been set by an innovative crowdfunding initiative in which supporters can buy privileges such as facetime with the puppets and their masters, Zapiro signed prints of the character design sketches, Desmond Tutu's voice (as a ringtone) summonsing you to answer, or Nelson Mandela's voice calling you to thank you for your contribution. Big spenders can purchase a Co-Executive Producer title on the show and a unique hand-painted Trophy Head of their favourite ZANEWS politician, while a mere $20 buys a "Bloody Agent" card to certify one's counter-revolutionary status. For the Guptas, there are political puppets to be bought and fill your pockets with. And yes, Kenny, for the right donation you'd be allowed to snort sushi off the latexed face of Helen Zille, if that's what you'd like to do.

    OF SPEARS, DICKS AND SATIRE

    First we had The Spear, a painting by Brett Murray. Now we have The Dick, a cartoon by Jonathan — Zapiro — Shapiro. And this satire of a genital nature has, in both cases, caused the same polarised reaction: support or amused indifference on one side; expressions of outrage on the other.
    A comment by the National Union of Metalworkers sums up the latter: “This is nothing else, but a frontal attack on the personal integrity and social standing of the ANC President Jacob Zuma camouflaged as artistic expression.”

  4. Cartoonists stand against media restrictions

    South Africa’s top editorial cartoonists have banded together to protest against the government’s intended press restrictions.

    In rejecting the proposed Protection of Information Bill and Media Tribunal, they have warned that these restrictions will erode the right to freedom of expression achieved by the country’s hard fought struggle for democracy.

    Renowned for his hard hitting political commentary, editorial cartoonist ZAPIRO (Jonathan Shapiro) has sifted through some 4000 drawings to extract the best of his sport themed cartoons for a presentation he made this past week at the Cape Town Book Fair. Africartoons was there to take notes.

  7. ZA News comes to TV

    ZA News CharactersTHE SATIRICAL life sized puppet show created by cartoonist Zapiro and produced by Thierry Cassuto will finally be flighted on TV after being canned two years ago by the SABC, who had co-funded the show's pilot to the tune of R1 million.

    Last year, the show took to the internet, changing its name from Z News to ZA News, and is currently in its second season after a hugely successful first. You can view it by visiting Africartoon's YouTube Africhannel.

  10. Grahamstown Fest Packed with Cartoon Events

    This Year's National Arts Festival in Grahamstown (30 June - 10 July) is filled with events that will be of interest to cartoon and comic art fans.

    Amongst those featured are guerilla publisher Moray Rhoda, who will be launching an SA/Australian comic book collaboration, Andy Mason, who will be discussing his epic book "What's So Funny?' and hosting a panel discussion and series of workshops on comic art, and perennial favourite Zapiro, who will deliver a lecture on 'Freedom of Expression'.
