Gavin

Born on January 9th, 1968, and raised in Cape Town, Gavin matriculated at Rondebosch in the eighties. During the nineties he worked in London for studios such as Disney and Warner Brothers, amongst others. He returned to South Africa with lots of experience, a vast music collection, and a beautiful wife, to work first as a graphic designer and then as a children's and textbook illustrator.

Today Gavin is the drawing partner of two highly successful South African newspaper strips, Mama Taxi and Trek Net, which are written by Deni Brown and Dave Gomersall respectively. Gavin also draws a weekly editorial cartoon for The People’s Post, and has extended his cartoon franchise with Dave to include Ripples, a nautical themed strip, and Terminal about airlines.

Gavin collaborates with his writing partners electronically most of the time. This system has worked so successfully for five years that Deni says they almost don't recognise one another when they occasionally meet to discuss strategy and management matters!

When not drawing cartoons (at a rate of almost two a day), Gavin illustrates the occasional book and CD cover, and still finds time to spend with his children and venture down the road to the beautiful Noordhoek beach. He drives an old Blue Beetle (after which his design studio is named) and he never takes a taxi.

Gavin's work has been published in a collection of Mama Taxi cartoons, and in the 2009 and 2010 editions of The Year in Cartoons. Exciting plans are afoot for the Trek Net strip.
