Grogan
Tony GROGAN is a stalwart amongst South African cartoonists whose work has appeared in the Cape Times since 1974, and also in The Sunday Times and Sunday Independent.
His editorial cartoons span a watershed period of South African history; from the turbulent times of apartheid's oppression through to the country's liberation, and its democratic present.
Readers of the Cape Times and the Natal Mercury have come to regard Grogan's daily quip 'Crack of Dawn' - which greets them daily from the front page - as much a part of their morning as they do a cup of coffee.
Grogan is also a prolific fine artist and book illustrator. His work has been published in many collections of his work, the most recent one being 'Grogan's 100 Best Cartoons' (Double Storey, 2003), which carried the following testimonies:
"Tony's cartoons have the capacity to make us laugh about our problems. Although it is a joke, it is always true!" - Patricia de Lille
"His cartoons pack a political punch that is always gloved with a smile and a laugh" - David Kramer
"Tony Grogan is to politicians what Kryptonite is to Superman" - Pieter-Dirk Uys
Grogan is also featured in the 2009 collection of cartoons by South Africa's top cartoonists entitled 'DON'T JOKE!' The Year in Cartoons, and the 2010 collection; 'JUST FOR KICKS!'.
[The accompanying portrait of Tony was done by British Gonzo cartooning legend Ralph Steadman, who created the ink splashes with the refill of a cheap ballpoint pen whose nib he had just bitten off! See an enlarged version of it here: http://africartoons.com/cartoon/1441]
