Roberto Millan
ROBERTO MILLAN was born in Pretoria on December 3rd 1985. He completed a BA in Information Design at the University of Pretoria and later made his way to Stellenbosch to do an MPhil in Visual Arts (Illustration) at Stellenbosch University. It was in Stellenbosch that Roberto explored his interest in comics, working part time for the Centre for Comic, Illustrative and Book Arts as a project assistant to Andy Mason, and communications coordinator.
He developed a keen interest in political cartooning while working for the centre through their promotion of the artform and interactions with top-brass cartoonists.
During his postgraduate studies at Stellenbosch Univerisity, Roberto became involved in the local gay student organisation, designing posters, promoting events and networking with Cape Town grassroots human rights groups and civil society.
The organisation provided a platform to combine his passion for human rights and design, during which he started freelancing on and off as a social issues contributor at national LGBTIA newspaper Pink Tongue.
Roberto won the Africa e Mediterraneo award for "Best Unpublished Comic Strip by an African Artist 2009-2010", recently completed his masters and currently illustrates a monthly 'pink' political cartoon for the Pink Tongue, while working full-time as an illustrator and cartoonist.
