CARTOONS IN CONTEXT

Two Centuries of SA Political Cartoons

The Sowetan newspaper and Museum Africa in Newtown, Johannesburg, will be hosting an exhibition titled "Cartoons in Context" which will showcase a selection of old and new political cartoons by some of the country's top editorial cartoonists.

Accompanying text and images will take viewers on a journey through South African history, spanning 200 years since the late 1700s.

The collection does not pretend to represent a comprehensive history of South Africa, but rather small slices of the past, bringing insite to the political and social conditions of the times.

Featuring leading personalities such as Cecil John Rhodes, Paul Kruger, Jan Smuts, Hendrik Verwoerd, Thabo Mbeki, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela and Robert Mugabe, the narrative takes one through such events as colonial settlement, the South African War, the rise of the National Party, apartheid laws and the transition to democracy.

Curated by Museum Africa's Linda Chernis, the selection features the works of well-known South African cartoonists such as Abe Berry, Dov Fedler, Zapiro, Yalo and early British cartoonists George and Isaac Cruikshank. 

'Cartoons in Context' opens at Museum Africa on October 20 as a long term exhibition. Entrance is Free.
