MANDELA: Twenty Years of Freedom
FEB 11, 2010 will mark the 20th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's release from prison. To mark the occasion Africartoons will be launching an exhibition of selected cartoons depicting highlights of the past twenty years entitled MANDELA: Twenty Years of Freedom. This will form a starting point to the relaunch of a much broader exhibition of Nelson Mandela cartoons, and the establishment of a library of cartoons about Mandela.
Cartoonists from all over the world have been invited to contribute their published work, adding to an already formidable collection of cartoon art. The Nelson Mandela Foundation has expressed interest in the project.
The second exhibition, provisionally titled Nelson Mandela: A Cartoon Celebration, is planned for a Mandela Day launch (July 18) and will feature editorial cartoons celebrating the political life and celebrity of Madiba gathered from all over the world. There are also plans for a live exhibition, talks by participating cartoonists, and a commemorative book.
