Cartoonists take a stand for Freedom of Expression

Just over a month ago, after the government responded to a satirical painting of the President with an enthusiasm which put their response to other crises to shame, africartoons invited cartoonists to follow the example of RICO, who had smeared his facebook avatar in a fashion similar to how the painting was vandalised.
The vast majority of South Africa's leading editorial cartoonists, and a small number of fellow commercial cartoonists took up the invitation to show their solidarity against threats by government to the Freedom of Expression. Bethuel MANGENA's contribution has brought the number to two dozen, echoing a stand taken in 2010 when cartoonists responded against the government's proposed 'Secrecy Bill' and President Zuma's law suit against Zapiro.
