DOV FEDLER'S 'ZIBI' IS NO HAS BIN!

FAMOUS OSTRICH TAKES FLIGHT ONCE MORE

ZIBI, the litter busting ostrich created by cartoonist Dov Fedler in 1979 to inspire a nation to “Zappit in the Zibi Bin”, has been brought out of retirement by the City of Cape Town in a 3 year rights deal with the cartoonist, and with an option to extend the flightless bird’s contract even further.

"ZAPIRO CARTOON IS ABOUT PROFITS (NOT PROPHETS)"

Last week Zapiro, South Africa’s most publicity hungry cartoonist, drew a cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him). Predictably there was an outcry and there have apparently been death threats aimed at the editor of the Mail and Guardian and the cartoonist. Both claim that this is all about freedom of speech but it isn’t and let me tell you why.

Bigotry is again riding rampant in reaction to last week’s Zapiro cartoon in the Mail and Guardian. Tolerance and even facts of religious history have become strangled by distorted theology, mouthed by authoritarians claiming to represent divine power.

ZAPIRO DRAWS FIRE

MUHAMMAD CARTOON CONTROVERSY

Jonathan Shapiro - the cartoonist Zapiro - has entered the fray surrounding the depiction of the prophet Muhammad by drawing him lamenting his followers' lack of humour in a cartoon published in the Mail & Guardian newspaper today.

The cartoon's appearance comes in the wake of the international "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day" challenge to a violent and threatening Islamic response to cartoon depictions of the prophet since 2005. Zapiro's fellow cartoonists are divided in their response to his cartoon.

Remembering Weyni

CARTOONIST FRANS ESTERHUYSE recalled fond memories of his old friend and colleague Weyni Deysel this week after learning of his tragic passing over the weekend. Frans had known Weyni for some twenty five years, and explained that the cartoonist who was remembered this week as one who "loved to make people laugh" had battled with depression.

Weyni Deysel's Funeral

THE FUNERAL of Citizen newspaper cartoonist Weyni Deysel will be held at Mosaiek Church, Davidson Street, Fairland today at 11am. Deysel died on Sunday morning in a Germiston hospital from a wound inflicted by a gunshot. The Citizen newspaper said yesterday that his satirical and humorous outlook on life and his positive attitude will live with his colleagues and friends at the paper for a long time.

PRIZEWINNING SA CARTOONIST COMMITS SUICIDE

DAY AFTER HIS 59th BIRTHDAY

Prizewinning veteran cartoonist Weyni Deysel committed suicide on Saturday evening  according to an SABC news report on Sunday. It was the day after his 59th birthday. Early reports say Deysel shot himself at his home in Alberton and died later in hospital. He left no note.

SWEDISH MUHAMMAD CARTOONIST UNDER ATTACK

WHILE DELIVERING AN ADDRESS ON FREE SPEECH, cartoonist Lars Vilks was subject to an attack by 15 to 20 people on Tuesday at Sweden's Uppsala University according to CNN. The Daily Cartoonist website reports that Vilks was head butted in the attack and shows a video of the incident.
