ZAPIRO SWEEPS MONDI NEWSPAPER AWARDS (AGAIN)!

BRANDAN, MILES COMMENDED, JUDGES ENCOURAGED BY TALENT IN THE REST OF THE FIELD

Jonathan Shapiro (ZAPIRO) has once again claimed top honours in the cartoonist category of the Mondi Shanduka Newspaper Awards, held at Soccer City in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 5 May. Judges of the ninth annual episode of the awards commended Zapiro's "combination of simple and direct draftsmanship, wicked wit and ability to think sideways [all of which] make him a world-class cartoonist". But they were also impressed by some of the other entries in the category.

Of the 41 shortlisted candidates (in all 15 categories) which were selected from 604 entries, panel convener and head of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University, Professor Guy Berger said, “The best were really excellent, and there was a feeling of appreciation and respect for the sterling work being done by South Africa's newspaper journalists."

For the first time in the competition, Editorial Cartoons made up their own specialised category, breaking from the Graphical Journalism entries in recognition of the special qualities that define each of those two disciplines. An impressive 31 entries were drawn by the new Cartoon category, and the organisers found that "there are many more South African newspaper cartoonists than a few years ago - and their drawing skills get better and better".

Cuan Miles (whose cartoons appear under the pen name "MILES" in the Daily Dispatch in East London) and Brandan Reynolds ("BRANDAN"), whose work is featured in Business Day, The Weekend Argus and Rapport were commended for their talents, while the judges encouraged other cartoonists "to look beyond the obvious and turn situations on their heads".
