Looking back over the past year it’s amazing to see just how the political landscape in South Africa and abroad has shifted and changed; old regimes have disappeared as if cajoled by quicksand and new leaders have risen to a new order.

For the very first time since the declaration of World AIDS Day, South African cartoonists have cause to celebrate a government policy that is finally taking the pandemic seriously. There is much still to be done to turn the tide against HIV/AIDS, but as this collection of cartoons clearly demonstrates, denialism has at last given way to a new activism.
