Dr Jack & Curtis

DR JACK & CURTIS is a partnership between two cartoonists - "DR" JACK SWANEPOEL and JOHN CURTIS - who have pooled their talents so that each can specialise in his strengths. Curtis conceptualises the ideas, and Jack draws them.

DR JACK's career spans some twenty years, during which time he has established himself as one of South Africa's best cartoonists.

As well as his editorial cartoons, Jack illustrates features, books and does book and magazine covers. He is also an established fine artist. See his full bio HERE

JOHN CURTIS started cartooning in 2003, and besides a stint at the Cape Argus where he served as daily editorial cartoonist for a year, his work has been featured in many local and international newspapers.

He has also collaborated with many of South Africa's leading cartoonists (cosigned with his '& Curtis' monicker). See his full bio HERE

DR JACK & CURTIS have collaborated casually since 2009, and their editorial cartoons have been published in almost every major English newspaper in South Africa (and a few abroad).

In 2011 they formalised their partnership, filling in for fellow cartoonists when they went on leave. In May 2013, Dr Jack & Curtis were rewarded with the cartoonists' position at the highly regarded weekly newspaper, City Press, and in October that year clinched the cartoonist's position for news service Eyewitness News' website, where they produce 3 cartoons a week (Tues, Wed, Thurs).

Also in 2013, they were awarded first prize in the 5th international DWJN cartoon competition (previously won by Zapiro), and traveled to Berlin to collect their award.

In 2015 Dr Jack & Curtis were first runners up in the Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalist of the Year Awards' Editorial Cartoon Category; the nation's top editorial cartooning awards (won by Chip & Curtis).

In 2016 Dr Jack & Curtis won the Editorial Cartoon Category of the Standard Bank Sikuvile Journalist of the Year Awards, and in 2019 they are once again finalists for the award to be announced in September.

Their work has been widely published, and exhibited in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Berlin, Nairobi and Norway.
